So long Joomla, hello Drupal

Foustland is in the redesign phase right now.  So if you are wondering why some of this stuff here doesn't look fresh, it's because I have weighed the options of:

  • Upgrading from Joomla 1.5 to 1.7
  • Dropping Joomla and relaunch this site with a Drupal back end

After a scripted upgrade to 1.7, which basically made a copy of the site in a different folder location, I realized that because the module position naming in the new framework I picked out was quite different from the naming in my 1.5 template.  So it is nearly as much work to just straighten things out.  And to be honest, I really like Joomla, but I really need to reorganize things here, and it might be just as easy to migrate and build foustland in Drupal.

After attending the BADCamp event in Berkeley in October, 2011 I pretty much got converted to the cult, so to speak.  I am really impressed by the overall energy of the development and user community.  The big part that really got me excied to dive into using Drupal for something more than a local sandbox, was the keynote by Danese Cooper.  Danese works for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, as well as being a new member of the board that oversees Drupal.  Take a look at her speech here.

I am really looking forward to making the new site in a whole new system.  Especially since the community is so rich.  Plus, it never hurts to know the ins and outs of a cool system like drupal, and all of the modules that extend the use of this awesome, open source tool.
